Helen Levitt’s wonderfully candid black-and-white shots from the 1930s and 40s of urban kids playing and ordinary people going about their lives— as well as the wonderfully warm and humorous street theater in her dye-transfer color prints from the 60s through the 80s— have inspired generations of photographers.’ Now is the time for her work to inspire you.
With that in mind, this year’s Helen Levitt Photography Contest invites photographers to interpret Contemporary Life in America. Of course there are many ways to approach this subject, but we are looking for your take on contemporary American society— your daily life, your friends and family, your thrills and disappointments, your commentary, the things that make you laugh and smile and the things that console you. We want to see all of it. The hurt as well as the everyday and the fantastic. Most importantly, we want your photographs to speak for themselves.
An exhibition of the the Amateur and Student winners will be hosted at Kobo Gallery in Downtown Savannah. The work will be displayed for several days before being shown at A-Town Get Down Festival in April 2018.
